Hair and Makeup Tips from a Pro
We have plus size summer dresses to die for in our new arrivals, but what about the rest of the look? We can always use tips on refreshing our beauty routine or working a new look. This month, from the distant shores of San Francisco, California, we have some wise tips for the hair and makeup department. Shana Astrachan, owner of Fox & Doll, is a stylist and consultant specialising in retro glamour. Her work has been seen for clients such as Bare Minerals, Sephora, Benefit Cosmetics, and many others.
What’s your top tip for improving a makeup routine?
I get asked a lot about this, and my number-one recommendation is to have a good set of brushes and keep them clean! So many people only have a few brushes and then wonder why they can’t get that professional look – you can’t create sculpted cheekbones if you are using the same brush for your foundation, powder, and blush.
What about creating special looks? The cherry red lipstick or cat-eye liner?
No way around it: practice is important for any new style. Don’t do a cat eye or complicated hairstyle for the first time right before a big event. Watch some tutorials and work on it in advance. Also, try a new makeup look at the end of the day before you’re going to wash your face anyway. That way you can see if you like it on you and not be worried about messing up. If it’s an eye makeup look, apply it differently to each eye to see how you can make it work for your face.
The current “natural” look for hair: how can we pull this off without looking a mess?
Most important is not to wash it every day; it starts to look best after two or three days. A little texture spray helps if your hair is smooth and fine. If you get oily at the roots, just use a shake-in dry shampoo, which is also good for adding some volume and texture.
I’ve been keeping my bangs super short so that I can wear it natural but still have some style. If you don’t want to go with bangs, try pinning or braiding the front away from your face, anything to give it a little shape without too much structure.
