Rock the Red

A bold red lip is classic glamour but it isn’t the easiest look to pull off if you don’t have the patience (or the budget) to find the right shade. Here’s a quick guide to some reds to try for different skin tones, with affordable ways to try them. Almost any of them would look simply amazing with almost any of the dresses in our plus size clothing line.

Don’t know your undertone? Look at the veins in your wrist. If they appear blue or purple, you have cool undertones. If they appear greenish, you have warm undertones.

If you feel a bit self-conscious about wearing a dramatic lip colour during the day, keep the rest of your face neutral with the “no makeup” look. OK, we all know that achieving that look does require some effort. The trick is to minimise distractions – discolourations and such – and to balance your features. Start with a foundation or just concealer and apply the lip colour. What’s out of balance? If the foundation washes you out, apply a hint of blush. Or maybe your eyes need a light swipe of mascara and a touch of liner. Go for the absolute basics here: a black or dark brown mascara, a brown, black, or dark grey liner just at the outer third of the lid. Let the lipstick do the heavy lifting.

Dark and cool

Think Lupita Nyong’o. Steer away from creamy and go straight for shimmering, bright reds or shades with some purple. Try it with: Rimmel London’s One-of-a-Kind.

Dark and warm

Here we can go for the matte, Red Cross reds. Don’t be shy. Test it with: Revlon Matte in Really Red.

Medium and gold to caramel

Berries and plums, yum! Keep the colour opaque, as a sheer one won’t pop against your skin. Test it with: L’Oreal Colour Riche in Raisin Rapture.

Fair and cool/pink

It’s cherries (not maraschino, though!) and cranberries for you, love. Just make sure that the shade has blue undertones. So many shades end up looking too orange, which is often what puts cool-skin-tones off wearing reds. Try: CoverGirl’s Lip Perfection in Tempt.

Fair and warm/yellow

Take your inspiration from Chinese lanterns and raspberries. Try it with: Rimmel London’s Best of the Best.

Natural Redhead

Go for coral red. Do it! A little mascara to define the eyes and you’ll be ready to draw looks. Try it with: NYX Cosmetics in Hot Tamale.
